Are you curious about the world around you, but sitting in a classroom makes you
yawn with boredom? At FLOAT School, you’ll hardly ever be sitting down looking at
a textbook. Instead, you’ll learn by seeing and doing: digging for clams, pulling
up crab pots, taking weather measurements (and sending them in to be part of the marine
forecast!), dissecting starfish, paddling canoes, and navigating by compass. You’ll
even go on an overnight camping trip. Who knew science class could be this fun?
FLOAT School takes place at SEA Island Marine Research Station, a float house stationed
just off Deer Island south of Wrangell Alaska. You’ll sleep in bunks, eat meals, and
conduct experiments from this base camp. There are also plenty of board games, card
games, and even a basketball hoop. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful, but
everyone at FLOAT School does their part for the community. Be prepared to help with
cooking, cleanup, and other chores. We supply you with all the equipment and gear you’ll
use exploring the environment around SEA Island, but we ask you to bring the items on the
following Equipment List [attach document]. Get psyched for the best ten days of school ever!

"While I‘ve been here I‘ve been working on a lot of different things like how to express what I
am feeling and not holding it in. It‘s taken a lot of practice and I am finally getting the hang of it.
Another thing I‘ve been working on is my anger and trying to take it out in a more productive
way then I have in the past I‘ve come up with a few ways that I am going to practice when
I get home that will hopefully keep me out of my old ways." - 15 year old participant
