For TeachersWe look forward to working with you and your students during this learning
adventure.
Student eligibility criteria
This Alaska Native grant-funded program is available to Alaska Native students in grades 6-12
within the six consortium school districts (Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Wrangell, Metlakatla, and
the Southeast Island school district), including students that are home schooled.
Schools are encouraged to utilize a selection process that suits their internal priorities. Each
session has a maximum of 10 students and can be co-ed. Schools are encouraged to keep alternate
students in mind to fill last minute vacancies.
Our 10-day program allows school districts to select their own 10 students. Our 30-day program
also has 10 places available to all school districts involved in the FLOAT School grant. Students
who have participated previously in the 10-day program are still eligible for this program.
Your Part in Your Student's Success
Thank you for your efforts in making the FLOAT School program a success for your students. Our
goal is to spark student's imagination and interest in science, and improve
academic performance. We encourage students to share their newfound skills and knowledge with
their classmates and spread their enthusiasm!
We've outlined some steps to ensure that this opportunity is a simple and
straightforward process for you and your students.
Step 1
Promotional information will be sent to you. When you receive this information familiarize
yourself with the content, and share this with your faculty and staff.
The promotional flyer may be used to illicit interest. Please write in the dates of your
program and the appropriate contact information.
Step 2
Interested students, or those identified as candidates for the program, can be given one of the
parent manuals. Additional copies can be made from the provided master copy. Encourage students
to return their completed paperwork ASAP to help with the selection process.
Timetable for submitting paperwork and information:
- We ask that the paperwork from the selected students be faxed to AICS Alaska Crossings
one to two weeks prior to the start date. This includes the Participant
Information, Medical History, Participant Agreement & Acknowledgement of Risk, Consents
(Travel and Image Release), and Behavior Expectation forms.
- Two days prior to the start date student names should be verbally
reconfirmed with AICS Alaska Crossings (866) 550-2371. At this time any last minute details
will be shared and we will confirm travel arrangements.
Homework
We provide time for homework to be completed while the students are at FLOAT School. However, we
ask that the assigned amount be reasonable given the full academic focus of the program. We have
developed a homework log so that the instructors can monitor and help to ensure that the homework
is completed while on the program.
Please feel free to contact us at any time to help facilitate
this exciting learning opportunity for your students.
