FLOAT - Float Learning Opportunity for Academic Triumph.
Alaska Native youth from the communities of Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg, Wrangell, Metlakatla, and
the Southeast Island school district in grades 6 to 12, have the opportunity to learn about
science and the environment they live in, while learning about themselves and having fun!
This program is operated by AICS Alaska Crossings, and made possible through the Alaska Native
Education Grant. This experiential education program is provided free of charge to Alaska Native
students. The purpose of this grant is to offer an alternative learning opportunity that will
engage students in a science curriculum and improve standardized test scores.
Our spring and fall 10-day programs are based out of Sea Island, our floating Marine Research
Station. Each school can send up to 10 students who will get the chance to explore and learn in a
totally different environment from the typical classroom. Using Sea Island as a
"base camp", students explore the coastal ecosystems of Southeast
Alaska.
Our summer program is expanded to 30-days in order to include activities in the mountains and
villages of British Columbia and the Stikine River, as well as Southeast
Alaska's coastal ecosystems. This intensive expedition-style program allows
for a sustained, hands-on learning experience over a wider, more diverse geographic area.
