Risk Reduction & Advanced Technical Support

The health and safety of your child is our number one priority. Parents and guardians have the right to expect that we will care for their child as they would themselves. We take this responsibility very seriously.

Research conducted by the Outdoor Behavioral Health Industry Council concluded that outdoor behavioral health programs, in general, have fewer recorded injuries than many high school sports. In the programs studied, responsible wilderness treatment programs have a lower injury rate than outdoor adventure camps.

Risk is inherent in everyday living. Taking healthy risks helps us test ourselves and grow in our abilities as challenges are overcome. Operating our programs in the wilderness presents its own set of unique, but manageable, risks and challenges.

In managing risk we take a pro-active approach in problem solving, with systems designed to identify and prevent serious issues. With this said, please remember that risks are still present in the activities that we engage in, and accidents can and do happen.

Our professional risk management staff analyzes potential hazards, from blisters to ocean crossings. We continually develop and refine protocols to be used in the field to handle issues if they arise, for the best possible outcome.

To that end, we employ the latest in available and appropriate technology to manage risk through a multi level communication and support system:
  • SPOT technology for continual tracking of the location of each of our groups. This is also available on-line for parents or guardians to track the location of their child
  • 24 hour access to on-call emergency staff, including a medical doctor
  • All guides carry advanced trauma medical kits
  • All groups utilize GPS units
  • All guides carry emergency flares and appropriate bear deterrents
  • Groups are provided with the ability to email and text from the field for consultation services
  • Each group has a satellite phone
  • All guides carry a waterproof VHF marine radio
  • Although no technology is a replacement for sound judgment and good training, these systems are an excellent resource in the event that an emergency takes place.
If you have any concerns or questions regarding the safety of your child, please feel free to contact us. We want you to be confident that you are making an informed decision about your child's participation in our program.
