Exceptional Field Guide Recruitment, Training and Retention
Our field guides are a unique and talented group of people; they have the ability to mentor and
teach skills in a culture of joy and optimism that youth can relate to. All of our guides are
professionals who have dedicated themselves to working with youth. They are carefully selected
and held to high professional standards. All of our guides have received rigorous and extensive
training in the following areas: behavioral management, curriculum implementation, wilderness
first aid, crisis de-escalation, wilderness navigation, emergency response procedures, canoe
instructor training, and general youth work skills.
Many of our guides return year after year. Our participants benefit from their dedication and
experience. Alaska Crossings has one of the highest staff retention rates in the wilderness
